About MCD Workroom
For decades we have been crafting fine heirloom quality upholstery and draperies in New York City as a family business. A true family business, with 2 generations of the Mihalios family moving the firm forward, we have been continuously growing our operation and expertise in the field. Owner John, was trained by Kris Sunderic, a Master Upholsterer who received his formal training in vocational schools in Serbia and continued apprenticeships in Austria and later the United States.
A close family friend, Kris took John under his wing and began teaching the process of traditional upholstery and curtain making, a process which is typically passed on from Master to apprentice, generation to generation.
These time-honored old work techniques, a rarity in the world today, are the backbone of our firm. Attention to detail is paramount and no detail is overlooked.
The finest quality materials are utilized, coupled with the expertise of craftsmen and women to create truly bespoke heirloom quality upholstery, fine draperies and wood furniture.
Our operation, with a family member overseeing every department, features an in-house wood shop which fabricates our upholstery frames, in addition to custom cabinets and furniture. The upholstery department, personally overseen and directed by John, is comprised of craftsmen who have been trained in traditional upholstery and have hundreds of years of combined experience.
The drapery department, headed by John’s mother Anna, is expertly skilled in hand sewing of hems and proper techniques for specific fabrics and styles. The result is beautifully hand crafted draperies and shades. Maria, the office manager, handles fabric inventories, shipping and day to day office operations. James and Kosta handle other aspects of the workroom.
